CeQOL – Inguinal Hernia 2.1.0

The surgical repair of hernias remains one of the most frequently performed procedures worldwide. Traditionally, the primary measure of success was the absence of hernia recurrence. However, advances in surgical techniques and the adoption of mesh repair have significantly reduced the rates of surgical failure. Consequently, the focus has shifted towards evaluating patient-centered outcomes, particularly quality of life (QOL), as a key indicator of operative success.

The Carolinas Equation for Quality of Life (CeQOL) is a tool designed to predict the likelihood of chronic pain following inguinal hernia repair in male patients. This predictive model utilizes responses to 18 straightforward questions addressing the patient’s personal health status, hernia characteristics, and current QOL related to their condition. Based on these responses, the model estimates the probability of experiencing some form of discomfort one year post-surgery. Derived from comprehensive data collected from postoperative patients around the world, CeQOL has been independently validated for accuracy and reliability.

Our aim is to leverage mobile app technology to develop an educational platform that delivers personalized prognostic information regarding QOL outcomes after inguinal hernia repair. Additionally, this tool will provide extensive educational resources on various hernia types and treatment options, supporting both clinicians and patients in shared decision-making and informed care planning.
